Now that you’ve acquired some pedals, the next thing you want to look into is what kind of pedal rack will fit your needs and wallet best. The way I see it, there are three classes of rack. I have organized these three classes by quality and price. Class I racks are the cheapest. Generally very low quality, but very cheap too (appx. $40 -$70). However, there is a way to subvert a lack of quality in a class one rack and that is too build one.
Homemade racks, if done well, are not only the cheapest way to get a rack but can also be some of the coolest racks out there. If your low on cash and willing to put forth the effort, a homemade rack is the way to go. Class II racks are more expensive but a fair price for what you get. Usually very durable, low profile, efficient, and convenient. However, they lack personality and that certain pizazz that some musicians are looking for. I personally use a “class II” rack and I love it. It is the Pedaltrain PT2.
This rack is a great size for a healthy but modest sized board, right in the sweet spot. AND, it comes with an ATA Flightcase. Very useful for transporting your board, especially when you know your roadies are dropping it. Pedaltrain makes other models as well that vary in in size but all of them made very well. Class III racks are the best of the best. Only a handful of companies make racks that are class III worthy. My personal favorite is Helweg Custom Pedalboards. Class III racks are 100% custom made to order. Always very expensive, class III racks incorporate lots of integrated ports and channeling to make plugging in and rearranging very easy to do and clean looking.
Which rack you end up deciding to buy ultimately comes down to how much you are willing to spend. So go home and check your pocket book budget out however much you can, and take the next step to completing your pedalboard.
